I noted that today the catkins on the hazelnut bushes looked active, so I went out and looked and sure enough there were flowers blossoming. The weather has been very warm for far too long and it sets off the plants in thinking that it is spring. Clearly the flowers and catkins are not activated by length of day but by temperature. This is bad news because there is still plenty of winter left to go and we will probably experience several cold snaps before spring - killing the flowers.

I planted some of the OSU varieties and Oikos Precocious variety. Did this in spring 2015 , my location is northeast Indiana zone 5b. Essentially I know nothing about hazelnuts other than they are good to eat. Thanks for sharing your experiences
