We are finally seeing the consequences of a really rough winter and spring. Grimo 186M was a fatality (planted Spring 2008). We also had added a Skinner, A red leaf, and a Het. As it froze hard after we put them in and the Het was worst affected - not sure if it will survive - there was quite a bit of new growth on it that was really impacted. The red leaf probably had almost as much new growth but seemed to be a bit hardier to the cold at that stage.
I was up in Edmonton for meetings and went by Holes nursery. They had an American Hazelnut, so I picked one up and replaced the dead Grimo. See the image above.
It seems obvious now - the cold snap was too severe for any nuts to survive - the bags might help for a day but an extended cold snap is deadly for the flowers.
