This last weekend the new hazelnuts arrived. Two Grimos, one Red leaf, and two Hets. The pictures show that they seem to be in good condition with the leaves already on the branches. I planted them in rich soil - old manure, peatmoss, regular clay soil mix. These were in large islands with other trees and bushes (two aspens, a maple, and two ninebarks. We are hoping that the mix will create a forest affect and I am really looking forward to the Fall colours.
It was warm but then we had a cold snap; two weeks of below zero weather (-14 C) that seemed to wipe out all the flowers, so I doubt there will be any nuts this year. Over the years it will probably be a hit and miss affair with the variable weather here in Southern Alberta.
