I ordered two more hazelnut plants from Grimo Nut.
Layered Santiam hazel
Layered Grimo 208D hazel
My plan is to plant the Grimo in one of my islands and put the Santiam in a large pot that I will bring indoors and put in our cold storage room over the winter. The idea is to keep the Santiam pruned to a small tree so that it retains a degree of portability so that we can shuttle it in and out of the house as the weather varies. For instance, in the spring if we experience a cold snap, we can move the tree indoors. The thinking is that this will ensure nuts even during those years where the weather would otherwise discount that possibility.
Layered Santiam hazel
- Santiam is a recently introduced, new highly productive commercial selection from Oregon State University developed for the processing industry. It is considered immune to filbert blight. The nut is medium size, round & well filled.
Layered Grimo 208D hazel
- Large high quality nut, Faroka seedling, bud mite and blight resistant, moderate bearing.
