I had thought my bagging during the cold spell (see Blast of Winder) hadn’t saved any of the hazel flowers but I was wrong. Two survived! - see the images above and below and to the right. ...so. bagging didn’t protect all the flowers but helped a few survive. Hmmm... I wonder how I might be able to bag a much larger tree and protect it from a future cold snap in the spring.
Here is an update from the hazel forest:
Below is a Skinner in front and a Northern in behind both plants are about 6 feet tall (1.8 m.).
Below is a Skinner in front of the aspen tree - 7 feet (2.1 m).
Below is a Northern to the right of a Skinner and in front of an aspen (6 feet - 2.1m.)
Below is a transplanted skinner we put in the back from one of the original plants in the front (see the center plant).
Below is the American Hazel from Hole’s nursery in Edmonton (the plant behind the stone):
Below there are three hazels, the one on the left and the right are Hets from last year. The twig with the leaves at the top in the back is a Skinner put in from this year.
Below is the Grimo from last year on the right and the red leaf is the long twig with a a few leaves at the top in the back.
